Using Visual Mind Mapping to Prepare for Your Driving TestThe most exciting day for a new driver is the day he or she gets his or her license. Yet, preparing for the necessary driving test can be nerve-racking; not only does one have to perform well behind the wheel, one has to remember the various rules of the road for the written part of the test as well. One technique that those preparing for their driving test often use is flashcards. However, flashcards only help one remember information for the written part of the test, and, even then, not very effectively. A Visual Mind Map, by contrast, can help new drivers both conceptualize any techniques for operating the vehicle successfully and recalling information for the written test. Visual Mind Maps contain this advantage because of their unique capability to engage one’s entire brain when one uses them. This capability lies in the spatial and highly visual format with which Visual Mind Maps are constructed. Thus, drivers using this tool now have the ability to literally “map out” the physical actions necessary for operating a vehicle, along with rules of the road, using words, colors and pictures. The result is an intuitive and creative diagram of everything one has to remember for his or her driving test that is easily conceptualized. For those new drivers looking to effectively prepare for their driving test, Visual Mind Maps provide an incredibly instrumental way to do so. What are Visual Mind Maps and How Are They Created?A Visual Mind Map is “a means of organizing information that allows individuals to create diagrams, pictures, and other graphic visuals in order to show the relationship between ideas or other types of information”. With a Visual Mind Map, the creator makes use of colors and images to construct the map and represent his or her ideas in a non-linear format. When creating a Visual Mind Map, the individual would usually begin by showing the key topic or main idea of the information as a graphic image, located in the center of the map. Any themes surrounding the main topic are shown on “branches” that are attached to the central image. Subsequent themes of less importance are then attached to these branches using “child branches”, and so on. The resulting diagram is a “map” of the ideas and information presented that includes the images, visual graphics, and colors the individual associates with each of the themes and ideas. Prepare for a Driving Examination Using a Visual Mind MapA new driver wants to get his license as soon as possible and is determined to pass his driving exam on the first try. Hoping to better conceptualize both his necessary driving skills and the rules of the road for the written exam, he decides to prepare for the test using a Visual Mind Map. The driver commences making his mind map by placing a graphic representing his driver’s license exam in the map’s center. He then divides his map into two sections, one for the driving portion of his test and one for the written, via “branches” that he attaches to the central image. He next lists, on “child branches”, the skills for the driving portion of the test that he will have to master. On “twigs”, the driver lists the physical actions he needs to take, such as checking the rearview mirror or keeping his hands in the “ten and two” position, to successfully execute each skill. To the “branch” representing the written portion of his test, he attaches the various rules of the road on which he will be tested via more “child branches”. On the “branches” attached here, he lists what he needs to know about each rule. When he has finished, the driver has organized everything he needs for his upcoming driving exam in one, neatly constructed diagram. The attached diagram shows what his Visual Mind Map might look like when completed. Passing the Driving Test With the Aid of a Visual Mind MapHaving studied and prepared for his driving test using a Visual Mind Map, the driver passes his examination on the first try. He is not surprised that he has done so; the visual and mental associations of his Visual Mind Map helped him internalize and recall both driving skills and road rules with ease. Moreover, the map’s intuitive layout allowed the driver to prepare for his test quite efficiently, as he was able to absorb information quicker than he would have done using another study method. Thus, the driver walked away from his driving exam with license in hand, and a new way to prepare for all types of future tests. No Comments Yet - You can be the first to comment! |
